About Us

The New Brunswick Invasive Species Council (NBISC) is a network of various government and non-government stakeholders that works to enhance collaboration and coordination of invasive species management initiatives in the province of New Brunswick. This position is a collaborative initiative between NBISC and the Canadian Council on Invasive Species (CCIS): a national charitable organization that works with partners across Canada to support actions and share information that can help reduce the threat and impacts of invasive species.

Job Description & Responsibilities

This position will entail assisting the NBISC (a chapter of the Canadian Council on Invasive Species) in their efforts to increase public awareness around invasive species and facilitate a collaborative & coordinated approach to invasive species management in the province. Specific responsibilities will include:

  • Assist in planning and conducting outreach events, workshops and educational programs

  • Support the creation of outreach materials, including brochures, flyers, and presentations

  • Attend events to engage the public & targeted user-groups such as anglers, hikers, boaters, campers about behavioural change programs that focus on preventing the spread of invasive species

  • Contribute to NBISC’s social media presence by creating content related to outreach events and educational programs

  • Conduct research on invasive species, their ecology, and best management practices

  • Assist with invasive species monitoring & removal activities, including eDNA collection, invasive plant surveys, insect trap installations, and plant removal efforts

  • Assist with the management of data related to IAS; coordinate the verification process for species observations, and collaborate with experts and stakeholders to validate data

  • Serve as a point of contact for public inquiries about invasive species and provide timely and accurate information; address questions, concerns, and inquiries related to IAS

This is a great opportunity for someone who is an outgoing, skilled communicator who loves the outdoors to gain further experience in the non-profit sector. People with the following skills are encouraged to apply:

  • Currently enrolled in a post-secondary program related to biology, environmental management, communications, or related field

  • Experience conducting outreach events

  • Comfortable engaging with the public

  • Experience creating & curating content for social media

  • Comfortable working outside in a variety of conditions

  • Experience conducting ecological field work

  • Creative, curious to learn, and self-motivated

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Bilingual, with oral and written fluency in French considered a strong asset

  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends

  • Valid driver's license and access to a vehicle/ability to rent a vehicle
